No. 766: Developing a technology to prevent a collision between a vehicle and a street car (September 4, 2013)

The University of Tokyo will conduct the substantiative experiment of a technology to prevent a collision between a vehicle and a street car in collaboration with Mazda Motor, Hiroshima Electric Railway, and National Traffic Safety and Environmental Laboratory for the first time in the world. The technology will establish communications between a vehicle and a street car and let the vehicle driver who wishes to make a right turn know that a street car is approaching from behind and ask him to take actions to avoid a risk.

In addition to the direct communications between a vehicle and a street car, a vehicle will load a system that detects independently the moves of surrounding vehicles and street cars with the help of built-in sensors. The university will present the experiment results in the world conference of intelligent transport systems scheduled for coming October in Tokyo. In Hiroshima, about 150,000 people use the street car daily. Street cars are increasing the presence in the planning of urban development, and the necessity of a technology to prevent a collision between a vehicle and a street car is growing.   
 
 ITS opens up a new world of traffic.
